What exactly are the symptoms of “trapped air” in the lugs?

On occasion, I experience a very severe, sharp pain in my upper chest, so much so that my body’s reflexes short-circuit the breath, but only if I inhale too deeply; if I keep my breaths shallow, I will feel no discomfort. To get rid of the “trapped air,” I many times have to steadily take in deeper breaths, bearing the pain, until it is gone.

For what it’s worth, I should note that I have an open thread () in the Heart Disorders forum regarding occasional LEFT upper chest pain that is followed immediately by what seems to be a buildup of air/gas in my lung. Burping relieves the pain. Though I do not think the issues are related, could they be?

Thank you.
