Low platelets
May 8, 2006
Hi. My mother in law has had lupus for 10+ years. I believe she had been on prednisone the majority of this time. Her doc just weaned her off of it to try Rituxan therapy. She has had 2 treatments and was supposed to have her 3rd tomorrow. They checked her platelets today and they were 3,000 so she was admitted into the hospital immediately. Has anyone had any successful treatment for low platelet counts other than prednisone? I feel like there have to be more options for her other than steroids and Rituxan.

Hey, Sara

Sorry to hear about your MIL. From 1989 to 1992 I had a bout with autoimmune thrombocytopenia and my platelet count was 4,000 when I was dxd (difinitive lupus dx didn't happen until last year). I was on high dose prednisone for a long time, but like your MIL, my platelet count would bottom out when they weaned me off the steroids. They tried a couple of things on me: 1) danocrine (a synthetic male hormone which did absolutely nothing except give me acne); 2) intravenous gamma globulin treatments (time consuming, but effective on a limited basis...kind of like the steroids); and 3) pro-sorba column therapy (a kind of plasmapheresis where they take the blood out, run it through a special filter to rid it of the anti-platelet antibodies, and then gave it back to me)

I wouldn't let the drs take out my spleen. They couldn't prove that that was going to work, so I refused. My platelet count normalized on its own after 3 years or so and I've not had to have any treatment for that since 1993.

Don't know if any of this helps. Hope the drs can find something to help. I think the prosorba therapy was kind of cutting edge at the time (1992-ish) and was totally expensive. Kaiser covered it then, after some wrangling on the part of my hematologist.

Best of luck to you.

Take care,
Michelle in CA
