Yesterday I was spending time with some friends. Last week I started Fentanyl patches 50mg and my pain is finally managed. Well, since I turned 24 I keep developing weird allergies to my favorite foods. IE: Pinapple, mango, papaya,Kiwi, cherries etc. My friend made me a drink with cranberry juice and a small amount of vodkka, as I am not big drinker.(Father was a raging alcoholic). Three minutes later It felt like I was on fire. I turned intensely red and itchy every where.
I took about 4 tsps of Bendadryl and waited. Unfortunately, my throat began to tighten and I was coughing non stop. So off to the friendly :) Er. Side note: Best experience ever at ER because they believed me. Not at all when I go for Lupus Flare or pain. The gave me epinepharin in inhaler form and solumedrol. I feel much better. They are saying it is probably the Cranberry juice, since I am proned to allergies to berries. It is just weird. I ate cranberries at Thanksgiving and was fine. I uess some of my questions are: Do any of you think the Lupus is causing these sudden allergic reactions to food? Has this happened to anyone?
I appreciate this board very much.
Thanks,
Christina
Redroses, Hi. Wow. What a scary event. I just looked up Fentanyl. It's a strong narcotic, and therefore a CNS depressant, correct? It carries a strong alcohol warning, so could the alcohol have been a large factor? And I wonder, can a person can even taste how *much* vodka is in a drink?

Maybe the sugar in the cranberry juice (naturally sweetened, maybe with additional sugar added) caused the alcohol to hit your bloodstream even faster? Had you eaten anything prior, to slow absorption?

Maybe because you started the patch only last week, your body is still adjusting?

Could 4 t. of Benadryl on top of Fentanyl be a factor? Do any of the Fentanyl warnings apply to Benadryl? And is 4 teaspoons a lot of Benadryl?

About your past fruit reactions (kiwi, pineapple, etc.): what were your symptoms? I've seen substance reactions, so I don't question how fast & furious they can can be (for my hubby, it's shellfish; for me, it's insect stings).

I hope you put together a comprehensive list, of questions, meds, your Dx'es, etc.; and then discuss same with ALL your drs. I hope others chip in soon, too. Wow, again---may you have no more scares like this one! Best wishes, Vee (P.S. Very anticlimatic, probably---but Happy New Year! :D )
Veej,
I am ok. It was a very bad reaction to cranberry juice. The Fentanyl was not the culprut. The one concern I have is that I had allergic reactions like this right before my last blood clot. Almost as a precursor. My lungs are very sore from the anaphylactic reaction. I will give you an update later. I don;t have insurance or a doc, so I have to wait for the possibility of clot and go to ER.

Hello,
I am new to the board but not new to the reactions you listed. I really think Lupus does cause reactions to different foods. I don't eat lemons becuase of the acid. You mentioned Fentanoyl patches for pain. Do they really work. I am constantly in a lot of pain. I take Prednisone (which I hate) and a ton of other pain meds. What are the side effects to the patches? Do you take Prednisone?
Thanks
K.
