I HAVE HAD BLOOD TEST MANY TIMES ALL WAS NORMAL ,THIS TIME CAME BACK ana POSITIVE.THE DOC SAID SHOULD RETEST .BUT THIS MONTH THE FATIGE AND JOINT PAIN ARE TERRIABLE.I NOW HAVE A SCALE RASH ON MY EAR ITCHY AND BURNING NOT GOING AWAY.
Hello, Maria. I met a woman with the same kind of lupus I have---the SCLE variant---and she had multiple episodes of scaly, itchy, weepy outer ear infections. I think her drs. sent her for outpatient antibiotic drips, as her problem was really hard to clear up. She was on steroids at the time, but I think she got off them & remained on Plaquenil. (I've never had this problem.)

ANA is only a threshold test, so it doesn't diagnose lupus. It can be positive in multiple diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and several more). But sometimes it's positive only due to a passing virus or family tendency.

Have your drs. run *specialized tests* in addition to ANA? Examples are anti-ds-DNA; anti-Sm; anti-Ro; anti-La; anti-RNP; complements C3, C4 & CH50; rheumatoid factor; anticardiolipin; lupus anticoagulant; etc. Did you ask for a copy of your bloodwork? If you your dr. hasn't done these more specific tests, I hope you can get him to do them, or refer you to a rheumtologist.

But ANA & the specialized blood tests above are only *part* of the diagnosis. There's a "sticky post" (permanent info post) at the top of the thread list that contains criteria for diagnosing & classifying lupus. You'll see some are symptoms while others are test results. This list describes SLE (systemic lupus), but there are other lesser types, too, the main ones being SCLE (subacute cutaneous), DLE (discoid), and DILE (drug-induced).

I hope something here helps move your thinking along & that you post more soon. Sending you my very best wishes, Vee
Maria, I forgot to mention how useful rashes can be. Dermatologists can perform skin biopsies to see if a rash is lupus-specific. You could ask if your ear rash is a good candidate for a skin biopsy (it may not be, as it's a bony area & contains delicate hearing structures).

Do you have *other* rashes located elsewhere?

People with lupus often have rashes that are lupus-specific, but they're also more prone to *other* kinds of rashes, too. FYI, the woman I met has lupus, but her ear rashes were NOT lupus-specific rashes. She did have lupus-specific rashes elsewhere for many yrs.

Bye for now, Vee
Hello Maria,

I had similar ear rashes and the ANA tests until a few months ago were negative. But I have recently been detected (only 3 weeks back) with SLE. I would recommend to please carry out all tests necessary to try and find the cause and make sure you get to it before it starts affecting you seriously.

Do you also have any mouth ulcers that dont seem to cure. As that was another indicator for SLE in my case.
I was told I have lupus in 2000 by a Dermatologist. Then saw a rheumatologist, who did alot of blood test he told me I don't have lupus. So how does one explain the rashes on my face, the mouth ulcers,THE FATIGE & joint pain ,oh yeah the hair loss as well. The ear scale is painful, has anyone here had any sucess with creams for the scale?????

I too am totally confused as to what is going on with my body. I have the ANA positive, a rash for two years, fatigue, joint pain and hair loss. One GP said Lupus, sent me to a rheumatologist, who did "more specific" Lupus tests that came back negative - so he said I have fibromyalgia and dimissed me. I'm still having the rashes (that are now scarring), along with a scaly rash in my ear, fatigue, joint pain, etc. so I made an appiontment with a dermatologist. I'm hoping SOMEONE will be able to get to the bottom of this!! :(
