Itching
Jul 17, 2011
I went into the hospital in 2008 for detox to quit drinking. Within days of getting out of the hospital I had itching on the back of my neck and my arms. Then the joint pains started and all the symptoms stopped in about 2 years. I then started drinking again and then just last month went back in the hospital for detox to quit drinking and again the itching has started again and the joint pains. The itching is always on the back of my neck and on my arms. The joint pains hurts different joints at different times. The itching gets so bad that from the last time I went through it I have scars on my arms. I feel like I need an ice pick to dig into my skin to stop the itching. Does this sound like Lupus or does anyone else have any ideas. The drs in our area have basically said they have no idea what it is.

Itching could be a sign of any disease if you look up diseases. It is more than likely related to the alcohol or withdrawal from it.

A complete list of symptoms and telling your doc would help a lot in the process of solving it. The vitamin deficiencies related to the alcohol may be the culprit although I am not a doctor so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I would look along those lines before I would lupus...

Hi. Are you on an alcolohol antagonist? Or any other meds, for that matter? If so, you could check whether side effects include joint pain, rashes, etc.

Another thought. Meds sometimes trigger a less serious form of lupus called drug-induced lupus (DILE). While DILE may bring on some of the same symptoms as classic systemic lupus (SLE), the autoantibodies seen in DILE "cluster" differently; for DILE, single-stranded anti-DNA (anti-ss-DNA) and anti-histone are at the top of the list for DILE, I think.

(For the two people I know who were evaluated for DILE, the suspected culprit was a cholesterol-lowering med. Ironic, huh? You take something to improve your health, and then it causes your immune system to malfunction & produce antibodies against your own cell matter...)

I hope you can work thru this & continue on your path to a full recovery. Sincerely, Vee

NOT LUPUS, sorry this is called DT's from the detox. Since it only happens when you are detoxing, it could also be a result of the medications they are giving you but no it is not Lupus. Lupus affects the joints, skin yes but not so wide spread it it doesn't itch too bad. I have the rash on my face not the typical "butterfly" rash but a rash none the less.

Tina & All, I found out the hard way that there are quite a few lupus rashes, quite varied, with some not well-known because they're rare. Some do go widespread. Most tend not to itch (but sometimes can), and at at least one tends to itch horribly (lupus urticaria). And several really are LUPUS rashes that are induced by drugs.

These are on a list I got years ago from a dermatopathologist on staff at a major teaching hospital. I was told best way to confirm is via deep-punch biopsy coupled with immunofluorescent stain tests. For what this is worth... Best wishes to everyone, Vee

malar (butterfly, sometimes called SLE rash)
drug-induced SLE rash
discoid (scarring)
acral LE
tumid LE
lupus panniculitis (profundus)
SCLE polycyclic (aka annular)
SCLE papulosquamous (aka psoriasiform)
drug-induced SCLE (like the 2 above)
bullous LE (watery blisters)
neo-natal
chilblain LE
LE-lichen planus overlap
verrucous LE (hypertrophic)
complement deficiency syndrome rash
lupus urticaria (very itchy)

I understand however in your post you stated each time it was after getting out of rehab not in between, I am currently going through a flare due to a) summer, b) stress and c) healing from piercings. That is why I stated not Lupus, you need to get diagnosed by a rheaumatologist not a dermatologist.
