Rashes caused by sun exposure are called photosensitive dermatitis. They are one of the classic symptoms of lupus. Redness only (not sunburn), itching, hives, red bumps and placques (flatter bumps) can occur. The sun can also worsen systemic symptoms like fatigue and joint pain. The sun causes skin cell damage, the cells release DNA, and if we have antinuclear antibodies (where the DNA resides) and anti DNA antibodies in our system, that triggers an immune reaction that makes us sick and react to those damaged skin cells with a rash. It is an interesting physiologic reaction that makes perfect sense. Vee has given very good information above, and I would encourage you to learn all you can. Good luck with your diagnostic process.
