Lyme Disease Message Board

Lyme Disease Board Index

Hi Marjorie. Often, infectious disease doctors are not the best to see regarding Lyme. That is not to say the one you see will not be knowledgeable, but if he is not do not get discouraged.

As you know, no Lyme test is completely reliable. The ELISA or titer test is usually the one most doctors run first. From what I understand, it is the least reliable test. The Western Blot test shows numerical bands and there results are usually defined as IgG and IgM. IgG shows a longer standing infection and the IgM shows a more recent infection. I always suggest that people get copies of all test results. Although the CDC requries a large number of bands to show on the Western Blot for it to be considered positive, many people who have Lyme do not have that many bands. Lyme doctors usually focus on which bands show because some are specific for Lyme.

It is best if tests are done at a reputable Lyme lab like IgeneX in CA. I suggest asking the doctor to run the Western Blot and tests for the co-infections Babesiosis, Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis, Human Granuolycytic Ehrlichiosis, and Bartonella.

Learn as much as you can before your appointment. Lyme is the second fastest growing infectious disease in the US after AIDS and has been reported in every state. Many doctors believe it is only in the northeast US.

Post on how your appointment goes. Good luck! What state are you located in?
