Lyme Disease Message Board

Lyme Disease Board Index

I read this somewhere. What do you think?

[A false negative for Lyme test results can sometimes be avoided by taking the following medication prior to testing for Lyme Borreliosis.

750mg Flagyl (Metranidazole) ER (Extended Release) once daily for 5 days prior to Lyme testing.

If the Flagyl ER is not available, then the recommendation is:

Flaygyl 500mg, twice daily for 5 days prior to Lyme testing.

In either case, the Flagyl is taken orally for 5 days with the blood test on day 6.

The rationale behind using Flagyl (Metranidazole) prior to testing for Lyme Disease (Borreliosis) is that Flagyl breaks open the cyst form of Borrelia burgdorferi. The cyst form is the form that the spirochete retreats to when its survival is threatened, and it is impervious to both antibiotics and the immune system. By breaking open these cysts with Flagyl, the immune system can then react to the bacteria. This immune system reponse is what the Western Blot is looking at.]

I am planning on asking my doctor to send out my next tests to IGeneX. What tests should I request?
