Lyme Disease Message Board

Lyme Disease Board Index

Well, our pediatrician was very open to the likelyhood of this being Lyme disease. She has only treated 3 cases of the disease in her practice, but she didn't think that the bullseye rash could be a spider bite and didn't seem to think that some other bug could have caused it. She said it's always best with this disease to error on the side of caution because of the long term effects if it goes untreated  so she pulled out her treatment book and also asked me what I might have come across when looking into treatments. We decided on having the western blot test done, which can detect the bacteria within 1-8 weeks of transmission. I think that if she was bitten by a tick, it occured about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks ago. In the blood draw order, she even included that it was to be sent to Igenix lab. However, the phlobotomist talked me into having the test run at the lab that normally does the hospital analysis, as they do offer this test as well and we could be certain of getting a sample in tomorrow with results back within the next week. In the meantime, the doctor perscribed 14 days of amoxycillan, which is what her 2004 book recommended for infected children. The book said that in the earliest stages, 14 days is sufficient, but if not detected until later, then a full month would be necessary. I am certain that if she was bitten by a tick, it occured within the last 2 1/2 weeks. She also warned me to watch for red and hot joints and to pay attention to anything my daughter complains of hurting her. Also, my daughter was running a mild fever today (unbeknownst to me), which would indicate a possible infection.

I really do hope that this is all just a case of me over-reacting (as my husband thinks  ) He doesn't think that the rash looked like a bullseye (I guess he's never seen a sign for Target, the store. :p

Thank you!
