Lyme Disease Board Index

Hi datatel, welcome to the board!

It sounds like your wife is experiencing the Jarisch-Herxheimer Reaction (herx). Often when people who have Lyme disease antibiotics, their symptoms may become worse or they may get new ones. When the antibiotics kill the bacteria, toxins are release making them feel sicker. It can be very scary but it is a good sign the antibiotics are working. Herxes vary individually, but many times people experience them when starting treatment and every three to four weeks.

I know it is horrible to feel so sick, but it happens when the bacteria are being killed which is necessary to eradicate the infection. Have your wife get as much rest as possible and drink plenty of fluids. It is a good idea to document her symptoms. One way to do this is to list the top three symptoms she has each day and give them a numerical rating of their severity. That way you can pinpoint when her herxes occur and how she is responding to the meds.

How long was your wife sick before getting diagnosed? Is she seeing a Lyme knowledgable doctor? Was she tested for the co-infections that ticks can transmit? Do you know how long she will be on the IV Rocephin?

If she has a PICC line, there is a product she can use so she can take a shower without getting the site wet. It is wonderful. It is called a PICC line protector and you can get it at Brown Medical.

It is important to learn as much as you can. One excellent book is "Everything You Need To Know About Lyme Disease (2nd edition)" by Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner.

Tell you wife to hang in there okay? It can be difficult to go through treatment but she is not alone. She is lucky to have your support.
I'm curious, how long did your doctor say you would be on the Rocephin. I had Lyme about 2 1/2 years before it was diagnosed. I've been on IV for 4 months (plus one month before that was oral antibiotics) and i really don't feel much better.

My dr. is very uncommunicative. I feel like i'm completely in the dark here..... Anyone know how long the IV treatment typically takes? How long until you feel a bit better? I'm very anxious and concerned because i don't feel much better, and my dr. won't give me an idea as to how long i should expect to be on the treatment, how long to feel better, nothing.

Anybody who knows ANYTHING, please tell me!!!!!!!!!!!!
