I'm a 47 year old male. I started having horrible panic attacks in December 2005. The attacks would last for several hours. Rapid heartbeat and palpitations, extreme anxiety, chest pains, and hot flashes. I went to the ER twice and have seen my Primary Care Physician and a Cardiologist. I've had EKG's, blood work (including thyroid), chest x-rays, 24 hour Holter monitor, treadmill stress tests, and an echo stress test. No heart problems. I was diagnosed with Panic Disorder. The panic attacks have decreased in intensity and frequency, but I still have rapid heartbeat and palpitations. I was recently diagnosed with Lyme Disease (6 bands positive) after having some flu-like symptoms. I tried the antibiotics, but my stomach couldn't handle them. I'm seeing a Naturopathic doctor who has done some blood tests for catecholamines. My epinephrine (adrenaline) is high, my norepinephrine is low, and my 5-HIAA is high. She is referring me to an endocrinologist. In addition to the rapid heartbeat and palpitations, I have sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, memory problems (brain fog), changes in my vision, tinnitus, and dizziness on standing. From what I have read lately, I am starting to believe that these symptoms are all related to Lyme Disease. I am staring to believe that I have had it for years and that I now have a chronic disseminated case.

Anyone have any similar experiences or symptoms?

Thanks.

Panic attacks are a common symptom. However, if you have LD then you need antibiotics. If you eat yogurt, take acidophilus and eat a low sugar diet you should be able to tolerate them. The primary cause of LD is a bacterial infection and you need to destroy that infection before you can hope to stop the symptoms.
