... I use shower gel - when showering I pull the foreskin back and rub some lather all over, then rinse thoroughly. I've been doing this as long as I can remember, with no ill-effects. I agree that soap might be a bit harsh though, especially if you don't rinse properly and some particles of soap remain - this could definitely cause irritation.
