D&c question
May 1, 2007
Well, it looks like my first ivf cycle will result in a miscarriage. I find out for sure next week. I have a couple of questions??? First off, if you miscarry at 6 weeks, do you usually need a D&C, or will you most likely miscarry naturally? If you don't naturally, is there some kind of pill or shot you could take to make you miscarry? I really do not want a D&C. I don't like being put out. My last question is if you could opt for twilight sedation instead of general anesthesia? I am opposed to general as I get very sick after. Any comments will be appreciated. Thank you!!

I had a D&C and I was awake for it. I had a regional anesthetic which is just numbing the cervix. I had 3 injections The first 2 injections did not sting but the last one did. I was not told about the side effects till after I started to complain. I could not hear. Everything sounded like I was underwater and I had a hard time swallowing and my body tingled it all passed in about 2 min. There was a clock on the wall that I stared at the whole time. It took less that 8 min to do the D&C.

It was not painful but it was not comfortable either. It was like 8 mins of a nonstop period cramp. I thought it was going to be horrible but it wasn't. I could feel the curette in my belly which was very weird. If you are awake for it the vaccum was very loud. I think that was the worst part not because it hurt cause it didn't but because I could hear it and knew what it was doing.

Soon as he was done the nurse asked me to get up and walk in the other room. The room had a huge chair that reclined with a large oversized diaper on it. The nurse had me sit in the chair with my feet up while she took my vitals every 3min. After about 15 min I was told that if I felt ok I could get dressed to leave if I didn't I could stay there. I sat there a few more minutes cause I swore I was bleeding all over the place. I finally looked between my legs and the blood was only as if I were on my period. She gave me a kotex I , got dressed and the doctor gave prescriptions to make my uterus shrink along with antibiotics. For pain I was to take ibuprofen.

I had huge clots the 3rd day that were bigger than a quarter so I called the office and they said if they did not stop in an hour to come in ASAP. They did stop but started again the next day. It was tissue like. I never got more than 2 clots a day and at the end of the week I was passing clear jelly like tissue with stuff that looked like pepper.

I continued to bleed on and off for the 2nd week. The first day I came home, tried not to cry cause my crying upset my BF more than he already was. He was pretty sad. He had bought my favorite movies ahead of time and all my favorite foods to try and help console me. I slept most of the day. After the first day I did not have any cramps.

I brought my favorite blanket with me I know that sounds silly but I did. I was allowed to bring it in the surgery room I am glad I did cause it was freezing.

I wish you all the best. HUGS!

Squeaky-

Wow, thank you for that long post. I need to hear stories that arent TOO scary. They all scare the crap out of me though. I find out this Monday what is going on. I was told to be prepared for the worst, which would be me needing a D&C because the baby is no longer alive. I am so scared. I hate thinking about it. I think after reading your story I will opt not to do general if I can. Those side effects do sound really strange. I'm surprised they didn't tell you about them beforehand. Well, thanks for taking the time to respond.

Since u are 6wks, you may be able to do it naturally without problems. I was told by a dr. that after 7 wks, it is required bcuz of the risk for the mother. I had a dr. that was in the process of retiring & did not make the right decision for me. I was 9wks at the time we found out the baby had passed, he told me to let it pass on my own.
I ended up in ER hemorraghing & passed about 10-11 baseball size clots. It was horrible & so much blood i was in shock. I had 2 misc. and had DNC both times. Of course i opted for the DNC the 2nd time, bcuz i had such a horrible experience the 1st time.
I was under for both and was fine. Hardly any pain afterwards and healed quickly. They give you anti-nausea med. b4 and you can let them know you have had issues w/throwing up in past & they will give you extra. I have stomach problems & still didn't get sick.
I hope all works out for u. I know it can be hard, but time helps heal all things.

Manda627 Yep that's the pill I was given. I had to take it I think every 4 hours for a couple of days. I forget exactly how many days. It was the week after Hurricane Katrina and things were a bit hectic down here.

Maggie, I know how it can be. I suffer from migraines at least 20 days out of the month. I to have gained weight since my miscarriage, mainly I think its comfort eatting. I also smoke too. I know that when the time is right everything will stop and I will conceieve. I was so set on having a baby that I think I just kinda wanna give up. I had my m/c 2/21/2007 and I still have my moments. My periods arent even straightened out yet. I finally got my period after 52 days. Thats like an eternity. Now...my period was like 3 days and its done?? I dont think I will ever be able to concieve with the way my cycles are..But I will stay positive and it will happen one of these days, months or even years.. LOL...My DH is 31 and Im 20 so we got time!! =) keep smiling and stay busy and it will happen. I wish the best for everyone...
