Switching medcines
Nov 13, 2004
I have been on Avonex for almost a year and it appears that it is not working for me. I went on it in December of '03 and did pretty well until about May. My MRI on May 5th showed development of one or two new lesions. My doctor was actually pretty happy with that though, because one or two isn't that many. So we thought I was doing well, even though my symptoms were getting worse. All along I had been falling, losing my balance, etc....And I was hospitalized on IV steroids for a week due to the fact that I was losing feeling on the left side of my body.

The need for hospitalization and IV steroids so soon after diagnosis made my doctor think long and hard about which medicine he wanted me on. He had been thinking about switching my medicine because of my worsening symptoms. At my last visit, he told me to get this MRI done and that if it showed any new developments he might want to put me on something else. So, I got the MRI done and the results were also sent to my GP and my ophthalmologist. MY GP, who is a family friend, gave me the results when I saw him for a physical last week. The report said that I have developed several new lesions, I have more white matter, one lesion has grown in size, and that the disease is spreading to previously unaffected areas of the brain. Needless to say, I am really really upset by this. I have done everything that the doctors tell me to do. I faithfully inject every week. And it is still progressing.

I was supposed to gto back to the dr on January 24th, but with the new developments, he wants to see me on November 30th. I am 99,99999999% sure that he is going to take me off of Avonex and put me on something else.

In fact, I am going to tell him that I want him to put me on something else.

My question to those of you who have switched from Avonex to another interferon is this: What did you switch to, and how was the transition?

And I just want to know what medicine everyone is on, and how you like it.

Which do you all think is the best medicine? Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone or Rebif?

I have heard very good things about Rebif.
