The entire thing has come off due to what I guess to be a fungus.

Any information is appreciated!
It will take up to 6 months (or longer) for the nail to replace itself from the cuticle to the free edge.
Thanks, Marti!

Is it necessary to go to the doctor? It has come off, doesn't really hurt that bad, and it doesn't look like it's infected or anything. I do spend a lot of time in the pool, and I tend to go barefoot a lot. Anyway, I wonder if I need any kind of medicine, or if it will just grow back on its own....

Thanks again.
The nail plate will grow back on its own, but like I said, it can take up to a year depending on your genetics. Keep it clean and dry. After coming out of the pool, wash the toe with soap and water, dry it well and then cleanse it by wiping it with a lint-free wipe dampened with alcohol. This will help to remove excess moisture from the exposed nail bed. While the nail bed is exposed, you need to at least wear things or flip-flops to protect the exposed ksin form bacterial or fungal infections. Bacteria and fungi are prevalent in dirt, grass, etc, so if you continue to go barefoot, you risk further exposure to infection.
