I'm not sure how long it has been since your surgery...& you don't say what your career is....so from the info provided it is hard to know how to answer, except to say I had ulnar nerve surgery on 11/4, I am typing this on 12/1...my hand is still weak as well...I have a lot of muscle wasting in my hand...but my hand is weaker now than before the surgery, which is to be expected at this point of recovery...but what I wanted to tell you is this (as far as the weakness is concerned): the doc told me it may be 3 years before the nerve heals enough to get my muscle strength back in the hand...but as of now at least it will not get any worse - it can only get better - and I don't know if your doctor is right to tell you it may be permanent...I would def seek a 2nd opinion before making any career changes or even thinking about anything becoming permanent.
The sub-muscular surgery is the most serious kind (I did not have that kind) and it will take the longest to heal. I hope you have good luck with your healing!
