Hello MichG,
I am so sorry to hear that you have not gotten any support since finding out about your diagnosis. There are many things that can help PN. I too thought I was doomed to never enjoy my life again since my diagnosis almost 6 years ago. I have suffered terribly with my feet with all of the symptoms you have described and more! But you really can come to terms with your diagnosis and learn to do all you can to lessen the pain and learn to live life as well as can be!
There are others on this board who are better equipped to help you in terms of some nutritional and vitamin therapies and supplements. But I will tell you what has helped me.
I am pre-diabetic also. It is imperative you keep really your blood glucose in tight control. It is also very important to wear a proper comfortable shoe (difficult I know!) and to inspect your feet everyday as the numbness can cause some foot problems to go unnoticed.
I try to always keep my feet warm and to never let them get cold. Getting them cold seems to make the pain so much worse!
I have had great success with acupuncture, something I was leery to try but found that it has really helped after 3-4 sessions. I go once a week (for the past 2 months), but now can cut it down to once every two weeks. It is helping with the numbness and the lightning flashes of pain.
Epsom foot soaks have helped some people as well as some creams that are specific for diabetic nerve pain and can be bought without prescription.
You really have to be able to find a balance for exercise and rest. Maybe you won't have to give up a nice walk if you are sure to balance it with enough rest. You will definitely pay if you overdo. This was may hardest lesson to learn!!
My preferred form of exercise now is anything in the water. I have to be very careful not to slip when walking on the wet pool deck but the relief I feel when I enter the pool is so enjoyable. I can water jog in deep water for an hour, something I could never ever do on land!
Lastly you may want to talk to your doctor about the many medications that are available for PN. It really is trial and error to find the right med or combination of meds so you have to be patient!!
I really wish you the best of luck. It may seem daunting now, but I am sure things will get better for you. Don't give up hope and please post here if you find anything that helps you, as we are all learning from one another. Sharing seems to be the best way to help ourselves!!
Best wishes,
Daisy
