Hello - this post is actually about my dad. He's not tech savvy so I'm taking to the boards. He's had chronic pain for over a year now, he is 67 years old. It manifests as a horrible burning sensation in his lower back but can travel down into his groin and leg area. He is currently on Oxycontin, Hydrocodone, Cymbalta, Gabapentin. If he's on all the meds, his pain is a 5 out of 10, it never fully goes away. He has breakthrough pain even if he is taking all the prescribed doses of the painkillers. He's been to several doctors, had several tests - nothing shows up. The only physical manifestation (something tangible other than his agony), is that his feet will become flushed. The other night one was bright red and warm to the touch and the other foot was normal color and cool. It's not much but at least it shows something wacky is going on. He's getting an EMG next week, hopefully that will tell us something. He is so depressed. He is normally very active, independent, happy, etc. He's been reduced to either being drugged and comatose or in such agonizing pain that he does not want to live. My mom is there to help but the stress on her is enormous and both my brother and I are not very close. I've seen a few things that may indicate fibromyalgia (sp?). Has anyone heard of this type of pain? If so, what was the diagnosis? My family is so helpless and I feel like I am losing my dad. Thank you for reading.

A few months ago I was just beginning to fall asleep when I felt a funny feeling in my big toe, right side, under the covers. I thought, gee, did I bump my toe or what? From that night on, there's been a gradual onset of what a podiatrist told me might be peripheral neuropathy, as some of us age. Yes, the burning, numbness, and just an overall feeling of what the heck is this, races through your mind. I've read this board and have not gone on meds, but try acupuncture once every week. It's helped a little, but from what I've read here, I don't know if I'll ever feel my feet again normally. The doctor who treats me says he will cure it because we caught it in time? I don't know, really I don't.

I have the redness also from the middle of both shins, down to my ankles, feet and toes. Sometimes it's not so red, other times it is. My numbness now is on the soles of my feet, but the burning continues now and then.

I am going to have an EMG at some point to try and have a doctor pinpoint, if possible, what's going on. I might not get results, as I've read on these boards, somtimes there are no answers. It's just the way it is.

My heartfelt thoughts go out to your Dad. The pain can break your spirit, I know. We all try to struggle through this as best we can. I hope he can find comfort and peace even if it's for an hour or so. Have him try learn to post here himself and put in words how he feels. It takes your mind off of the pain sometimes. Just a thought. Blessings.
