Osteoporosis Board Index

[SIZE=2][FONT=Comic Sans MS]Hello Osteo...

I'm new to the board also. I had to make the same decision as you concerning Fosamax, Actonel or Forteo. I also have severe osteoporosis and did take Actonel for a short while. After learning how bad my bones actually were (loss of over 40%) and upon the suggestion of my doctors, I decided to go with the Forteo. In fact, I wanted to take Forteo although I knew of the black box warning (osteosarcoma in rats in extremely high doses). I felt like Forteo was possibly my light at the end of the tunnel.

I fractured both feet and my hip in a three month period....no falls or bumps.....just normal walking. I don't want to go through another broken hip if I can help it and the fractured metatarsals are no fun either. I am suppose to take Forteo for two years maximum. I've been on it now for 3 months with no side effects at all. It gets to be a hassle with the daily shots in the thigh but it will be well worth it if it strengthens and builds new bone. Forteo works in a different way than Actonel and Fosamax. I know it's a big decision to make and you have probably researched it thoroughly (I did). I'm sure there are others on the board who are currently on Forteo and could give you lots more information. I just wanted to let you know about my decision and to also let you know that you aren't alone. It's a scary feeling when you think something could break at any time.

Of course I also have to take Calcium and Vitamin D and my Ortho doctor thinks my hip is healed enough to start some mild bone strengthening exercise. I know (well...hope) the Forteo will help but I've got to do my part too. Good Luck!
