"I think I can. I think I can. I think I can..."

...The Little Chronie That Could!!!! :bouncing:

I don't blame you for forgetting all of the questions you had for the nurse. When I saw the N/P for my instructions in the use of the pen, I was so overwhelmed by needles, clockwise, counterclockwise, diamonds, arrows, numbers 1 and 2 that I couldn't have remembered my own name!

I don't even have that excuse anymore, and I still haven't called anyone about my Actonel question. :o As soon as I get off the computer....

A chart? You got a chart? I didn't get any chart. I am jealous.

Isn't the travel bag cute and clever? I'm going away in a couple of weeks to see my family in Massachusetts, and I am so excited about using my little bag. Pathetic, I know, but we find our pleasures wherever we can.

When are you picking up your Forteo?
Ugh, picked up my Forteo today. Yer right, I had to clean the frige out to make room. Sigh.

I got home, pulled the literature out of the box, put the box and pen in the frige (for now, gonna dig the travel bag out and utilize SpineWhine's suggestion. Anyway, as I got out the literature from the box I noticed no needles. Say what. So I called the pharmacy, hey, where's my 28 needles?? Then I remembered someone here commenting one time on having been given longer, thicker needels. Ugh. That didn't sound like fun. Fortunately, the package insert I had in my hands mentioned the kind of insulin needles that worked well w/the Forteo pen and so I told my pharmacy exactly what I wanted for needles and asked did they have to be scripted by my doctor?? When my family doctor scripted my B12 he also scripted just exactly what needle he wanted me using.

The pharmacy called me back a short time later to tell me they had some needles for me. That they had assumed they were included with the Forteo. They sold me a box of 100 and I checked them out. They look just like the needles that came with the practice kit altho a different company than listed in the literature. Turns out (I had forgotten) my insurance doesn't pay for needles. Sheesh!!! No biggie. $8.17 for 100 of them. So next Tuesday I go in for my doctor's nurse to watch me give myself my first injection. Butterfly day coming up!!!!
Chronie, you have your very own Forteo! Woohoo!! Isn't the travel bag just the cutest?! (well, except for the dorky flowers; I wonder if there's a woman's bag and a man's bag...)

I still haven't cleaned out my refrigerator to make room for my bag, because I've convinced myself that all that bending and reaching might cause me to spontaneously break a vertebra or two until the Forteo kicks in, which I'm assuming is going to take at least six, seven, eight, nine, twenty-four months. (This is an excuse I've been using a lot ever since I found out about needing to go on the stuff!!!)

You're going to be so jealous of me, Chronie, because I got about ten needles in my starter kit, and another 30 with the medication when it came in the mail. They were the right size and everything!

But I'm jealous of you, because you didn't have to get the Two Letters brand of needles. My husband gets the Two Letters brand in a longer length for his insulin, and we pay $27.99 for a box of 100!!! When I run out, I'm going to see if our pharmacy carries a less expensive version. (We'll need to check it out for my husband's pen, too.)

I can't wait to hear about Tuesday's appt. Good luck!
Shucks, I never thought of using no bending or reaching for fear of fracture as an excuse to try to con my hubby into making room in the frige!!! You're a smarter woman, than I, PatNJ!!
SpineWhine, didn't you accidentally have the "knee-jerk" reaction to teach your doctor to be gentle?? What a great excuse to give him a good swift kick. So what did you learn by him giving you the shot?? My Endo's nurse made it QUITE clear she expects ME to give the shot, all she is gonna do is supervise (and catch me if I faint outta fear?). Wicked grin.
Turns out, I "ain't" so smart after all. I thought I checked those needles good. Uh uh. They are 21 guage all right BUT they are 5/16" instead of 3/16". No way, Jose! I'm taking them back Monday. I want 31 guage, 3/16" just like what comes w/the Forteo starter pack, thank you.
The ones the pharmacy sold me are Leader brand Pen Needles, 8 mm short, 31 guage, 5/16" long.
The ones that came with the Forteo sample kit are Becton Dickinson & Co's Ultra-Fine III mini needles, 5 mm, 31 guage, 3/16" long.
:nono:
You two aren't kidding me! You just wanna know if I chicken out, pass out, or make the cut and do the stick and where I do the stick. I probably should make a video tape of the event for posterity, you think?

PatNJ rules! Brilliant. Wouldn't work here, though. I can't even get the toilet seat left down, even when I complain about my sometimes bad lower back.

Oh, I'm not that brave. I think doctors can always get you back . Who knows how many unnecessary blood tests I could get sent for?

I had to do all the dialing to set the pen. He just stuck it in and let me push the injector button. I think I might not have actually gone through with it if he hadn't, to be honest.

Absolutely! That exta 2/16 of an inch sounds mighty scary to me.
PatNJ,
I thought I understood from my doctor when I started on Forteo that I shouldn't continue taking Actonel (I had been on it for a year). When I wasn't sure I called to confirm and she said that you should not take Actonel/Fosamax while on Forteo. I would be interested if anyone else had any different instructions regarding taking both.

As for traveling with the Forteo, I had previously posted on another thread (I think) that I had success on a plane trip which took me about 12 hours from my home to my destination by putting the pen in the little travel bag with the cold packs, then putting that in an insulated lunch bag with ice packs around it. It stayed cold until I reached my destination and was able to put the pen in a refrigerator. I carried the bag in my carryon bag along with some needles and alcohol wipes (in case my checked bag went elsewhere) and had no trouble going through security. I have some concern about a car trip we'll be taking next month where we'll be on the road for about 4 days. I guess I'll pack the pen in it's original box and put it in the styrofoam container that the specialty pharmacy sent. They used ice packs instead of ice and they seemed to stay frozen longer than most ice packs I've seen. I would like to use ice packs for the car trip since it would be less messy, but I don't know how I would keep them frozen, so I will probably use ice.

Crohnie Too,
Sorry you're having to put off the "day of reckoning". The anticipation is probably the worst part. The first time or two is really hard, but then it does get easier. I'm sure you will do fine.

I empathize with you about the needle size. My starter kit came with a 30-day supply of the 31g, 3/16" mini needles and I figured the smaller the better! When I got my first prescription from the doctor she prescribed something else (I think it was 29g not sure of the length). Anyway, I talked to the pharmacy and the doctor and was able to get it changed to the smaller needles. After the third month, my insurance required that I get the Forteo through their Specialty Care Pharmacy. They called me to confirm where I wanted it shipped and asked me if I needed supplies (they will supply needles & alcohol wipes at no extra charge, which is nice). Anyway, I told them I would be needing needles before long and asked for the shorter 31g needles; I guess I didn't think to specify "mini" needles because they sent the 5/16" ones. I am still using up my supply of 3/16" needles, but am afraid I am stuck with the ones they sent. So I guess I will give them a try when the time comes although I'm sure not looking forward to it. But then I ask myself can 1/8" really make that much difference. For a needlephobe like me, I'm afraid it might.

At any rate, good luck to you.

[CrohnieToo, I don't see you on the boards tonight. Since you said you were supposed to start the forteo today, I have to ask, are you okay]

Yes, Dorri, thank you, I am fine. Yesterday was just a busy, busy day and the needles didn't come in until this afternoon. The only 31 guage, 3/16" pen needles they could get were the ones that came w/my Forteo starter kit and WHAT A SURPRISE! $32.95 for 100 of them! As compared to the $8.17 for 100 of the 31 guage, 5/16" Leader brand pen needles! What a rip off, huh?

Anyway, I bought them because I am a chicken about the tummy injections. But I kept the Leader brand 100 too. For the thighs. After all, I already do a 25 guage, 5/16" regular needle on syringe for the weekly B12 shot and they aren't bad at all. So same length and even thinner needle for the Forteo thigh shots should be a piece of cake.

The nurse was really busy this afternoon so she said to call first thing tomorrow and we'll see if she can squeeze me in before my noon appointment elsewhere or about 2:30 PM after my other appointment.

Will keep you informed!!! Gotta run. Another busy evening!
