I went back to see my internist today to get results of my most recent Dexa Scan. I have been on Forteo for one year, and this was the first follow-up scan. There was almost no change in either my hips or my spine! I haven't lost any more bone, but I haven't gained any either. Has anyone else had the same experience?

After talking with the doctor, I guess I will go another 8 to 12 months on the Forteo, then back to Fosamax. There doesn't seem to be much choice. When I was on Fosamax before going to Forteo, it was not building up any bone in my spine, which is why we changed to Forteo. According to the doctor, Forteo is now five years on the market and there is still no report of any human osteosarcoma. He told me that they are thinking of removing the black box warning, which is encouraging.

My doctor discouraged me from having a dexa scan before being on Forteo for 18 months. He told me that although there is bone growth, it does not mineralize enough to show up on the scan before that. I have followed his advice and have not had a repeat scan, although I have just finished 13 months on Forteo. Others here have seen results sooner, but don't be discouraged. I'm not wishing the next six months of my life away, but I'm anxious to see where I'll wind up when I do have the scan. By then, it will be about two years since my last scan, when I was -3.5 in the spine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some improvement. I'm very excited about the improvement some of our colleagues here have posted about.
