Osteoporosis Board Index

Hi, osteoblast. I recall reading about this issue somewhere along the the line. At the moment the only hightly specific info I can find from my various saved articles/websites is the following quote from a website (sorry I can't cite the source):

"Estrogens (used in hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women) reduce the risk of Osteoporosis in menopausal and post-menopausal women (by enhancing the retention of Calcium within the Bones and by inhibiting the ability of Osteoclasts to cause the break down of Bones): Estrone (produced in Osteoblasts via the Aromatase enzyme) helps to prevent Osteoporosis (by stimulating Osteoblasts)."

So, it does sound from this as if estrogen stimulates osteoblasts to build new bone. I'm not exactly up to speed on bone physiology (!), but from my reading done a few months ago before beginning bio-identical hormone therapy, I think I'm correct in saying that estrogen (and, even more, natural progesterone) do build bone pretty much as it was built before we "menopausal types" lost most of our natural hormone production. Of course synthetic hormones can have various negative side effects, and even natural estrogen has to be used with care (e.g., not normally by those with breast cancer), but if the main concern is improving bone, estrogen, especially in conjunction with natural progesterone, seems like a good choice. I'm using bio-identical hormone therapy to -- hopefully! -- prevent osteopenia from progressing to osteoporosis. I'm on Synthroid for hypothyroidism, and my endo insists on something to protect bone -- the other choice given was a bisphosphonate, so, to avoid that, as quickly as possible I located a physician specializing in bio-identical hormone treatment!
Hope this helps!
