Osteoporosis Message Board

Osteoporosis Board Index

I'm also a small woman (5'3", 112 lbs) with T-scores that diagnose me as having osteoporosis. An excellent book recommended by many on this Board ("The Myth of Osteoporosis" by Gillian Sanson) states: "osteoporosis is overdiagnosed in persons of petite body stature, simply because the means of reference populations are calculated from the values of large and small people". My GP confirmed this when I asked.

I've been taking bio-identical hormones for about six months now. Blood tests indicated I had hormonal levels consistent with a woman in her eighties (I'm mid-50's). It's too early to tell if this treatment will be effective for building bone density (not the reason I started), but my GP thinks it might help.

Like many others, I'm taking Strontium Citrate. For me, other medical problems have made exercise problematic for many years -- possibly a contributor to my low bone density. However, I have recently purchased a rebounder -- a top-of-the-line bungee cord style which I find very smooth, quiet and comfortable. I originally considered vibration therapy, but found the vibration too vigorous and rather irritating. I love the rebounder, but can only do a few minutes a day. There is a lot of information on the web about NASA's use of rebounding exercises to rebuild bone density lost by astronauts during their time in zero gravity. Apparently, NASA's tests proved it to be quite effective.

You're right -- it is overwhelming to sort this all out. Try to find the book I mentioned. It should help you to feel a bit better about your diagnosis. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply and the book recommendation. It is on its way from Amazon! I'm intrigued about the rebounder exercises - the concept of why they would help makes sense to me. Which one did you buy and is there anything about it you don't like? Regarding the Vibrational therapy, how did you try that? I Googled that in my area but came up blank. I did find a few machines you could buy... I too am considering Strontium based on this forum.

I wish you wonderfully healing with the HRT. It seems to me like studies show that it is an effective treatment. I too am having other symptoms and was considering going on it any way. To me, the risks of it seems far less than the other pharmaceutical medications out there.
