Hi Kate! Boy, what a stressful situation you are dealing with. FWIW.....cervical polyps are very common and are growths on the cervix. These can cause abnormal pap results if I remember correctly--though I can be wrong. Do you know what the exact results of the pap were (ex: atypical, low grade, high grade, etc)?

I had my first abnormal pap (after 10 years) in 2005. The results were LSIL (low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion). I had a colposcopy where 6 biopsies and a ECC (endocervical curettage) were performed. The results were HSIL (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) extending well into my endocervical canal. I had a very aggressive LEEP cone biopsy in June 2005 that confirmed HSIL but the margins were clear. I recently got a ASCUS pap in May (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance). As this can mean anything, I'm just having a repeat at 6 months (in November). Fingers crossed that all is well. Though I had HPV, it seems to be "dormat" now since the HPV DNA test they did after the ASCUS pap was negative. That is good, of course but, with my history, I'll ALWAYS worry!

Anyhow, I hope all is well and you just have a cervical polyp--which are almost ALWAYS benign. Are you having any bleeding with intercourse? Sorry if TMI! Polyps can bleed with intercourse as well as anything that causes contact with the cervix.

GL! Let us know how things go tomorrow!

That would be scary for sure and I do think you need to get this checked out sooner vs. later because it's causing you so much pain. Maybe it's a prolapsed uterus? I'm just guessing. I've never heard of anyone having pain with a cervical polyp. If there's an infection in addition or an infection is the cause of the pain, swelling and lump, then you need to get treatment ASAP.

And, yes, anxiety is a VERY normal reaction to an abnormal pap--no matter the severity of the abnormality. Especially since it's not something you've dealt with before. I was scared out of my mind in 2005 but, even though my most recent pap was abnormal and I have a history of dysplasia, I'm oddly calm this time around--think all the anxiety ran it's course back then! LOL!

Anyhow, please call your doctor and let him/her know about the pain and lump. If you don't get in quickly, go to the ER if you can. I do think the pain requires prompt treatment. It could be nothing or it could be something. Either way, you need to deal with it.

Please let us know what happens! I'll be sending positive thoughts your way!

Hi Kate! I'm glad you are able to get to the doctor soon! There's just no reason to suffer! I hope she figures out what is the problem and you get immediate relief. GL! And let us know what happens!

ASCUS=Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance. It's an abnormal pap result that is "vague." There are cellular changes but why cannot be determined. There are no lesions, tho. ASCUS, in terms of level of severity, is pretty minor and very common. The results could be from infection, inflammation, etc. I have a history of cervicitis so I'm thinking that is what is going on. But, since I have a history of severe dysplasia, my doctor is keeping a close eye on the "changes." But, since it was "only" ASCUS, all I need to do is get a repeat pap @ 6 months--which is in November. I'm not worried--after a couple years of dealing with this I've become kinda "immune" to worrying. I figure all I can do is keep up with the paps and go from there. I'm fortunate, I guess you can say, in that I'm done having children so I have the avenue of hyst. if it comes down to that.

Anyhow, hope all is well this afternoon! I'll send some positive vibes your way!
