What next?
Dec 30, 2007
Hello! I am new here and feel like I've been in a whirlwind for the last 10 days. I am a 46-year-old female, happily married for 28 years (with the same man for 30 years), 2 children ages 19 and 22.

I went to the OB/GYN on Dec. 20th for bleeding during/after intercourse which caught me off guard because I was not on my period and have never experienced bleeding during intercourse before. He was alarmed at the sight of my cervix, took 5 separate biopsies including endometrial as well as cervical and removed a couple of suspicious looking polyps. I just had my annual check-up and PAP smear and November which came back normal, but he repeated the PAP smear and ordered a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis and also set me up with an appointment with a pelvic surgeon/oncologoist.

I had the CT scan the next day (Dec 21st) and the results were not too encouraging. My uterus is enlarged and lobular, abnormal cervix, free fluid in the levis and right lower abdominal quadrant and "smudgy nodularity in the omentum and mesentery" as well as matted circumferential wall thickened area of the small bowel in the right lower abdominal quadrant. My OB/GYN ordered an ultrasound after getting the results of the CT scan, both abdominal as well as trans-vaginal. The results were unremarkable, showed that my ovaries are normal in size and really not much else. He also took blood for a CA-125 as well as a colon cancer tumor marker test. The CA-125 came back at a 106, and the colon cancer tumor marker was normal. I know that the 106 is fairly elevated, but from what I've read an elevated result to this test can be caused by a number of different things, particularly in a pre-menopausal woman, and this test is better for measuring progress in ongoing treatment than as a diagnostic tool.

I got the results of the 5 biopsies on 12/26 and they were all NORMAL! The PAP smear has not come back yet. I had a celebration and felt elated over the negative biopsies, but kept my appointment with the pelvic surgeon/oncologist on 12/27. My elation quickly disappeared because he too was not at all pleased with what he saw in my cervix, and took several additional biopsies and sent me for a PET scan on 12/28.

So now I am waiting for the results of the PET scan as well as the additional biopsies taken by the specialist and I am nervous and scared as all get out. I don't really have many risk factors for cervical cancer as I have had sex with only one man for the last 30 years and I know that he has only had sex with me as well. I have also had annual OB/GYN exams and have never had an abnormal PAP smear. The weird thing is that other than the bleeding during intercourse, I really don't have any other symptoms. I am healthy and feel good. I have noticed in recent months that I have had heavier than normal cramping during my periods, but chalked it up to normal perimenopausal symptoms.

So I guess I'm just posting here because I need to talk about it at this point. The waiting for the test results is nearly killing me. I would welcome any comments or thoughts.
