First is there a different between anxiety attack and panic attack? I have always suffer from anxiety attacks but they where always bought on by stress in my life. Like I used to show horses and right before entering the ring I would get one. Now I'm into menopause and it is exacerbating how often and how worse they are. Plus I am hypothyroidism. I see a Endocrinologist later this week, I know my hormones are out of control and the anxiety will settle down once they are. But for now I need something! One day I had one so bad at the Doctor office I had to leave before being seen. My old Doctor had given me donnatal for IBS and I notice it works great for anxiety attacks. I looked it up and one of its ingredients, is phenobarbital,( a mild sedative). Since we moved last year to another state and I had to get a new Doctor> she is not please I am taking donnatal. I only take it a few times a month now, she said it is habit-forming and has ask me to stop. I hope to get a appointment this week and see what she can give me, my brother started taking xanax and it's working great for him.

something along the lines of people having something called generalized anxiety disorder which means stressed out and not coping well in most situations with perhaps occassional panic attacks - and anxiety attack is a panic attack but shrinks will use the word panic attack because by their medical guidelines a person who is having more than three panic attacks a week for a month or longer can be diagnosed with panic attack disorder. My father has the tag generalized anxiety disorder yet in talking to him he has never said he has felt the things I have felt while having a panic attack - he talks about being uncomfortable with certain situations but has never done the 50 yard dash off into the woods while screaming I can't hack it any more or the more insidious "I Am Dying right now." as you roll around on the floor waiting for death to come...

benzo's ativan has a short shelf life in your blood - xanax will give you sedated feeling - in my own private idaho - klonopin has worked the best it has less sedation and stays in your blood more - so rather than taking it when you feel a panic attack coming on - you can take .5 Klonopin twice daily and stay ahead of the game.. however if your doctor is fussy about her beliefs in addiction you might have trouble getting your needs met with her.. when I asked for klonopin after seven years on ativan - I had to read the VA doctor a riot act when she started talking about long term effects - I think the arguement ended when I told her if I didn't get some relief from the panic attacks there wasn't going to be any long term to worry about...
