Panic Disorders Message Board

Panic Disorders Board Index

alright.. well, for the most part i have gotten over the actual panic attacks i've had... i still get panicky, but don't have the attacks, so thats a good thing and why i don't post on this board anymore...

but i've been battling w/ what i would call moderate to severe ibs symptoms... i was put on tofranil by my GI specialist... along w/ donnatal(anti-spasmadic) and I called to see if he would give me a script for Xanax, as i had gone through one RX of #20 .25mg over the course of 1 year... So obviously me taking 20 .25 mg in a year is wayyyy outta the "dependent" stage.... He did give me an RX of 40 .25mg pills... so I was very happy about that...

Since a lot of you are super familiar w/ xanax.. I was wondering, I find some great great relief taking things when I'm going through an IBS attack.. and have read just today that Xanax can be useful in treating IBS... however I know these are hard to get for an extended period of time for use... I don't take them often, only when I have severely painful days.. My GI specialist told my parents he could refer me to a psychiatrist and I would imagine they "may" be more willing to write a script for Xanax or another benzo after hearing my story.... I guess like HRY33 says, the older ones are the ones who prescribe them most... The newer ones are hip on the SSRI anti-depressants.. but since I am taking anti-depressants.... and they haven't been what I would call super beneficial.. How likely would it be to get a script of say 10 .25 mg a month? I mean, I may not even take that many, but you all know, just having themhelps sooo much..... I just think that it would help sooo much for the days when I have super painful spasms, and the anti-spasmadic and anti-depressant just don't cut it.....

If anyone can find any part of this to help me out on, I would appreciate your replies...

I've been seeing my GI for around 3-4 years, do you think I should take my case up w/ his referral to a psychiatrist.. because the anxiety of IBS has caused me to lose 40+ lbs.... and my parents, as well as myself, have become nervous.... I have maintained my weight now.. But I want to gain weight back to a healthy weight... Because right now I just don't look as healthy as I did before... 195 down to 155.. 6' tall.. It might seem like I needed to lose weight, but I was rather built, so now I look like skin and bones...help anyone im desperate
good luck with getting some xanax, remember any other valium type med would be as useful, so perhaps just ask for any and let the doc decide which

tofranil, as you may know is an antidepressant and these can reduce anxiety and panic attacks if taken at the antidepressant dose, generally 150 daily, its sometimes prescribed at smaller doses for other problems

I would try different diets for the IBS
