I'm looking for any suggestions. Here is my drug cocktail for the day as of right now. Xanax 3.0, Xanax XR 20 mg., Zoloft 200 mg., Welbutrin XL 150 mg. and Benedryl for sleep. This is really pathetic! I suffer from severe anxiety and panic attacks. It all stems from something that happened to me in my younger days.
My doctor started the Xanax XR hoping that this would wean me down a bit from the regular Xanax, but that hasn't really happened. He told me to kind of experiment with it to see if I could find an "okay" medium. Well, I don't think the Xanax XR really does anything. Even if I take 10 mg at one time, I don't think it helps. My doctor just upped my dosage of Zoloft from 150 to 200 mg thinking that this may help me wean a bit from the Xanax. This doesn't really seem to be helping me either.
I hate taking all these meds., but they do help me with the anxiety and panic. Actually, Xanax gave me my life back. I've been on 3.0 mg. for about 2 years and I don't feel that I need more to cope throughout the day.
At my last appointment, my doctor prescribed Klonopin, 0.5 at bedtime for a week then increase to 0.5 mg in the morning and at bedtime until my next appt. He also wants me to minimize my Xanax consumption as much as possible. I have not yet taken Klonopin yet as it hasn't been two weeks. The thing that worries me is that I don't want the anxiety and panic attacks to return. I'm scared to take another kind of med. because I don't know how it will work for me. I just want to get off of everything all together, but I know that can't be done right now. Is there anyone else out there that is going through these same problems? I'm not addicted because I do not abuse my meds., but I am dependent on them very much. Please give me suggestions. Anyone???

Zoloft and Wellbutrin are both very stimulating to the nervous system. In fact, Wellbutrin is a norepinphrine re-uptake inhibitor; norepinphrine is basically adrenaline. Adrenaline is thought to be a culprit of anxiety. Serotonin(Zoloft) is excitatory and is also a powerful vasoconstrictor, vasoconstriction tends to raise heartrate and blood pressure. Why they give anxiety people these drugs is beyond me, except for maybe paradoxial reactions? I'm not a doctor but really this makes no logical sense. And they do warn of anxiety as a side effect, so.....

THe best anxiety meds are the benzodiazepines such as Xanax; unfortuantely, they are heavy in the dependancy, tolerance (stop working) and withdrawal problems for some. Klonopin is a benzo like Xanax, only it has an added affinity for helping seizures and is longer-lasting.

There is a free manual online called the Ashton Manual; Prof. Ashton was a pioneer in studying benzodiazepines effects and their withdrawal syndromes. She ran a withdrawal clinic in the UK years ago.

She is retired now but offers her manual free to anyone it might help.
