Panic Disorders Board Index

Hi All...Jerry here. I'm 43 yrs old, and back in 1995 I suffered from panic disorder. I actually developed whats called "heart phobia" and became a cardiac cripple. I was convinced I had heart disease. My pulse would shoot to 150 during an attack. I wound up in the ER several times, and went to many other heart doctors for all kinds of tests. I also received cognitive therapy back then, and lo and behold, the panic attacks subsided to a oint that the past year they were almost gone.
Then, 2 weeks ago, my 77 yr old father suffered heart block and respiratory collapse in the ER and I witnessed the whole thing. he's doing ok now with a pacemaker, but when I saw his heart on the EKG and then stop breathing, I freaked, and the anxiety/panic is back with a vengence.
To top it all off, for the past 6 monhs, I have been monitored for high BP, and my follow-up appt. was just this past Monday. Well, I knew I had high BP, but since the panic came back, and with absolute real fear of even looking at a blood pressure cuff and EKG machine, I freaked during my exam. My BP and pulse was real high, then during the actual EKG, I had a full blown panic attack.... I told the DR. I was suffering an attack, but she dismissed it and told me the EKG shows abnormal.....Tachacardia and left ventricular hypertrophy...Great!!! I'mhoping it was just a bad reading during the severe panic attack, as I now have myself worried sick that I have an enlarged heart.....They want me to get more tests, like an echo, but I'm not ready for them yet...I can't even LOOK at a BP machine...I freak....So, I'm taking my BP meds and hoping all goes well...I used to have a nice slow pulse, now its constantly in the 90's....Anyone here with similar problems/phobias???
Hi Jerry, don't worry about your heart, I went to ER about 30 years ago and they acted like I was ready to croak, told me I had mitral valve prolapse/tachycardia and blah blah blah. Well its true but now I am still here!!!! When I get in the panic stage I feel like I am going to die but never have. Also, now I have a phobia with BP in the Dr office, in fact I don't think I can ever go thru them taking it again! I monitor it at home and first got high readings but now I do a newspaper crossword puzzle mentally while sitting in kitchen and my bp is not bad at all, abit high but often normal. Deep breathing helps the pulse also. You recently went thru quite a shock,so you can't judge anything about your health right now. Sign up for some Tai Chi classes or QiGong and start taking brisk walks and also get some books out of the library on breathing and meditating etc. Then when you settle down you can do any tests the Dr wants to do. Don't forget that they know they can be sued if they don't offer all the tests but you can refuse to take them.Make sure you eliminate junk food and caffeine from your diet.
Hugs
