I agree that ignoring the behavior is the best way to deal with it. If he sees that he gets attention for the tantrum (this includes negative attention) he will do it.

Move him to a safe place if you have to, like a gated in room, a playpen, or his crib, and then walk away. Allow him to cry it out and do not go to get him until he is done. It may be hard at first, but it better to do this now then deal with a 5 year old throwing a temper tantrum in the grocery store because you won't get him what he wants, right?
