I think that as a baby's brain and nervous system mature, their sleep cycles change. This will happen periodically throughout childhood. Don't jump up as soon as you hear him make a peep, because sometimes they aren't really even awake, and it's mom going in there that wakes them up. Wait a minute or so and see if the cries escalate before going in. One thing I tried was putting a pillowcase that I had slept on in my son's crib because if they detect your "scent" when they wake up they may lull themselves back to sleep. Also, he is probably getting a little old for this, but have you tried swaddling?
