Re: Mixed diagnosis
Mar 30, 2005
Personality disorders like BPD are developped throughout a person's life due to abuse and constant fear. Since their early life conditions were so difficult, a person with a personality disorder often has several diagnoses as most non-genetic mental illnesses stem from the same place. BPD is also frequently seen with bi-polar since the symptoms tend to be very similar.

As for the drugs you are on:

Zoloft is an SSRI type anti-depressant. It's frequently used for depression, anxiety, BPD and other disorders because it doesn't cause a dependance and the side-effects are much milder than other types of anti-depressants. Note that it takes 3 to 6 weeks for SSRIs to be effective.

Abilify is an anti-psychotic normally used for treating schizophrenia. I don't know much about that specific drug, so you'd be better off checking out the company's website to learn about side effects and other information.

While it might be strange, anti-depressants and anti-psychotics are used often in treating BPD, the first one helping your mood swings and the second, the psychotic thoughts that often accompany BPD.

What's important now is that you find yourself a consillor who is experienced with treating people with personality disorders. If you can find one who is specialised with BPD, all the better. BPD takes several years of therapy to overcome and it's crucial that your therapist is very competant.
