Hi. Yes there are medications out there to stop labor. If your having a lot of pain/cramping you should call your doctor. Cramping could be an indiction of something as simple as a UTI. The sharp pains could be ligament stretching. I had a lot of problems with ligament pain in my last pg and had to use a warm compress to ease it (instructed to by my dr).

A baby is considered viable at 24 weeks. I had a daughter at 20 weeks and they did nothing to help her. So the further along the better the chances. Since then I always set little milestones, 24 wks, 28 wks, 32 wks etc. I'm 19 wks now and of course nervous b/c of my history with loss.

If you ever feel something doesn't feel right, please do not hesitate to call your doctor. Even if it is a UTI, you need antiboitics to clear it up.
