Gooby: He has not had surgery. The week suggestion was related to the time just before drawing blood for a repeat PSA.
Certainly, a person posting here on a "Cancer Board" is concerned about having cancer, but most of us are not simply concerned but have been diagnosed with it. That makes us a selective group that is probably very good for someone who wants to be conservative, but also a group that may be overly conservative at times.

I was told by more than one doc (pre-cancer dx so obviously pre-op) that PSA does not clear very fast so a 1 week period would not neccessarily allow the body to expell PSA enough to give a clear indication of non-excited PSA level.

Personally, I don;t know how fast PSA is expelled. I was simply relating the info given to me by more than one doctor.

Well, I went to the urologist this morning. He spent a lot of time with me and gave me a lot of information, though 90% of it was a repeat of what I've read on this board and in articles. Good to know there is reliable info here. Anyway, he pulled up some old PSA numbers I didn't have before and here is my history:

March 2004 1.76
May 2005 2.59
March 2006 3.24
12 May 2007 4.17 (oh oh)
24 May 2007 (retest) 2.88

He said the last test was very encouraging, and also his DRE was negative. But he said the previous rise and the spike raised some concern and suggested a biopsy. After lots of discussion we agreed to yet another retest in 3 months and if it is above 3.5 to have a biopsy.

In the meantime I'm watching my health much more, eating better, not drinking much, taking prostate health vitamins, etc. I began this before the retest that showed a much lower PSA so I hope with healthy living I can keep the PSA down.

Thanks again for all the useful comments and advice.
