Cancer: Prostate Board Index

Highly appreciate inputs from members here, i am currently very concern and seeking some advice here.

I am 73 year old and almost 6 year ago identified with Prostate cancer. Had the radio therapy 6 years ago and removed the prostate

PSA after Radio therapy was .1 and constant. Ealrier this year January 2009 PSA test revealed as .3 , I was concern but doctor asked me to repeat after six month. I just another test in Auguest 2009 and my current PSA came as 1.9.

You all can see i am so much concern and not sure where to turn for answers. My doctor told me to repeat after three months and he will go from there.

I have following questions.

1. Is this sign of cancer recurrance. If yes what could be suggest treatment. What should i do here.
2. If this normal PSA count considering my age
3. Not sure how all of sudden after 5 years PSA can go that high, without any sign and prostate is already removed.

Hi Hanu,

I agree with Guamjohn's post. I'll add a bit more to this excerpt from your first post. Jim

As I understand it, it probably is a sign of a recurrence. Guamjohn had excellent comments on what to do.

2. If this normal PSA count considering my age

I know of good tables for PSA as related to age that apply before a patient is treated, but I think age as it drives PSA is not a factor in considering recurrences after treatment. You cannot really relate age to a normal, post-treatment PSA.

3. Not sure how all of sudden after 5 years PSA can go that high, without any sign and prostate is already removed.

Unfortunately, the cancer can be dormant for years after being knocked down but sometimes not knocked totally out by the treatment. :( Even though the prostate itself was removed, some cancer could have escaped beyond the prostate before the removal, and that escaped cancer may now be back in what used to be the space for the prostate or at a different location. :(

Good luck with this,

Jim
