Interesting! My grandmother had Bipolar Disorder and I have it. No one in my family is acting like your girlfriend because of the family history.
My brother used to worry that he might develop it too, but it didn't cause him to have relationship problems...

Has she ever exhibited any moodswings? My sister didn't start having problems until she was in her 30's - a mild form in her case.

My original advice still stands though.. There has to be an actual break-up. If there are no consequences she could do this for years rather than get help.
A counselor may advise a casual relationship, but you mentioned "even having a sexual relationship" - which I just don't see ANYone advocating in this day and age of AIDS & STDs!!
