Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) (CRPS) Board Index

Hi everyone
I've been gone for a while because RSD and back pain has been so horrific that I can barely function. I hope everyone is hanging in there and coping. Me...I'm having a hard time but I've been feeling slightly better in the past few days so I thought I'd drop in and ask a question.

PM switched me from Neurontin to Lyrica and I think the Neurontin was better for me. Since being on Lyrica (almost a month now), RSD flare has been terrible...especially left leg, which was the origin of my RSD. Right hand and lower back are also showing signs of an impending flare.

I'm curious as to why my Lyrica bottte says "controlled substance" ???? Is there a narcotic in Lyrica?

Re my back surgery...I've been suffering from anxiety and panic attacks whenever I think about it. I may have to put this off for a while until I can get a better handle on it. Maybe because the RSD is so bad lately?? I'm thinking of going to a psychologist (someone I saw prior to my SCS trial).

Very depressed lately :( Also on Wellbutrin to quit smoking and wondering if this is contributing to the depression??

I'd appreciate any input. Love to all,

Dear Vicki,

Sorry you are having a sad time of things - quitting smoking is real depressing and one of the hardest things you will ever do (at least it was for me). What helped me enormously was that a neighbor who was a friend and a heavy smoker came down with terminal lung CA (she died within 3 mths of the diagnosis before the age of 60). It really brought home the message that smoking causes cancer, and I never smoked another cigarette after that. If you can just keep that message in mind it might help you through the process. Nicotine withdrawal also made me horribly depressed for a while.

Good luck Sandy

I don't know why the lyrica bottle would say that...mine doesn't. It has no narcotics in it at all. Lyrica is the "replacement" for neurontin. Sorry it doesn't seem to be working for you. You definitely need to tell your doc if the neurontin was helping you more and get back on it. Lots of us flare a lot during these months because of the cold and the cold fronts coming through so often. Have you hurt more because of not taking the neurontin or might it be to an external factor such as the weather?

Hope it all calms down for you soon!

Hi Karen,
Thanks for your words of support :)

I thought it was strange that it would have the "controlled substance" label because I didn't think it was a narcotic or anything that could be abused. I think I have to get back on the Neurontin. I see my PM next week.

Take care,

Hi Vicki,

It's nice to see you :). I'm sorry you're feeling so badly lately. I wish there were something I could do to help you. I would think that when you tell Dr. S how you've been doing with the Lyrica, he would have you go back to the Neurontin. Is Lyrica a type of drug that you have to work your way up on the dosage (like Neurontin)? I've never taken it so I know nothing about it. Hang in :).

Hi Vicky,
You have so much on your plate right now, I do hope you go back to the psychologist and have some sessions with him/' so important to vent completely and deeply with words, emotions, thoughts that you can't even share with family and friends..I hope it helps with the anxiety and panic attacks as i know those are harrowing... I had one session (one!?!!) a couple of weeks ago authorized by the insurance, and emotions and tears came up that were stifling me...I hope more sessions are authorized. but I won't hold my the meantime, I cry in my car sometimes.....and when no one is around...
Hope you have a good night's sleep !
