Going crazy here
Jan 4, 2011
I'm distressed folks. First, a little background info.

I'm a 30 year old male, who was perfectly healthy until I injured my knee at work. I waited six months to have surgery, then during surgery I suffered a DVT in my right leg. I did the PT thing, but it made the pain worse, especially after surgery, and now I'm currently in Pain Management. I also see a pretty good ortho, and between the two of them they have ordered many tests on me. I've had the EMG study done on my leg, which was pure unadulterated torture, a triple phase bone scan, and an MRI. Prior to the test, my pain dr. was fairly certain that I have RSD, but the ortho was thinking it was something else. Then after the tests, they switched positions! My ortho said he was about as sure as he could be that I have RSD, while my pain dr. says I have Post Thrombotic Syndrome, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Chondromalacia, Patellar Femoral Syndrome, along with some nerve damage and serious problems in regard to how my kneecap tracks in my leg. To add to that, I just had another EMG done prior to Christmas, and discovered that I have moderate Carpal Tunnel in one wrist/hand, and severe CT in the other. Couple that with searing pain in the leg that wasn't injured, constantly twitching toes on both feet, and skin flaking off of my foot and calf (no lesions though, thank God)...and I'm just really confused.

Everything I have read and been told about tests is that there IS NO TEST for RSD...so how can both of these doctors say one thing prior to the tests, then totally switch positions because of the results, with both doctors specifically saying that "the results of the test showed that I did/didn't have RSD"? I realize that changing the diagnosis won't magically make what i'm going through better or worse, but it was the wording they both chose that makes me weary. I don't know how different the treatment would be for what I'm currently doing vs. treatment for possible RSD ( 1800 mg Gabapentin/day, 15 mg morphine sulfate 3x/day, 5-10 mg oxycodone imm rel 4x/day, compression sock and constant heat) but I'm curious as to whether any of you have suffered through something similar, and if there are some questions that I should be asking but can't think of. I've developed this searing, red-hot-knife-with-electricity-running-through-it type of pain in my thigh on the affected leg immediately below my hip, and it's shooting all the way down into my foot (oddly enough, the toes and bottom of the rt. foot stay pretty numb...and kinda cold.) It's really hampering the ability to think.

Any info you can share with me would be greatly appreciated. I see my pain dr. next week, and I want to be sure to ask for anything else you guys may know of that could help in any way, as the course of treatment I'm on isn't cutting it anymore...about a 7 on the scale, close to approaching 8 over the last week (first time pain has made me cry since the DVT right after surgery.)

Please help, thanks in advance, and may God bless you all.
