Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) (CRPS) Message Board

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) (CRPS) Board Index

Hi everyone. I've had 8 stellate ganglion blocks so far, and am having another Wednesday, and again on Friday. The amount of time of my pain relief varied with each one. Your eye is supposed to get 'droopy' if it's successful from what I've been told, and the temp of your limb is supposed to increase. The pain is supposed to go away too, butthe amount of time it stops can vary.

The reason the temp of your hand increases is because the blood flow is increased in that limb. The increased blood flow is what will help the nerve rejuvenate, so whether the pain stops for a few minutes or several hours or more, if the block increases the temp of your limb, then it's working. Yes, it's great to have the pain stop and not come back, and don't get me wrong, that is the ultimate goal, but sometimes damaged nerves literally take months (or longer) to heal.

If you don't get your blood flowing to the affected area, then you're decreasing the nerves' chance to heal, and thus your chance to get better. As far as I'm concerned, and this is just my opinion based on what I've heard about the increased blood flow/temp and blocks, even if my pain is back, if my hand temp is up more often, and my hand isn't as cold as it usually is, then I know my blocks are doing their job.

Alot of people have been saying that they keep hearing that these blocks don't work cause the pain came back or such. My pain came back, but I haven't given up on SGbs, cause I know that this is my only chance of getting my rsd into remission since I won't have a sympathectomy.

I hope this helps, and I hope you all have as pain free a day as possible.
