Re: Opioids & RSD

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

When I was on Vicodin alone, my RSD pain got worse, much worse. However, I do not think the worsening of my pain was caused by Vicodin. It is just that, for me, Vicodin is ineffective if taken alone. After all, Vicodin is not really designed to be used by people with severe chronic pain.

My doctor then switched me to Oxycontin 40 mg (1 tablet twice daily), which I took for 3 to 4 months. This medication was effective. The doctor later switched me to Duragesic 50 mcg (1 patch every 72 hours). Duragesic was also effective, but I do not enjoy the side effect of nausea and sometimes vomiting.

When I use Oxycontin or Duragesic, medications designed for severe chronic pain, Vicodin is effective for breakthrough pain.

Besides the opioids, the other medications I am using are Neurontin 300 mg (2 to 3 capsules 3 times daily) and Lidoderm (lidocaine 5% patches, as needed).

I was referred to Anesthesia by the Ortho Clinic. I hope an anesthesiologist can do nerve blocks to further relieve my pain. Who knows, maybe my RSD will go away, never to come back!

Thanks again for your replies! I feel that this board is like a big family where you can share your feelings and get interesting ideas.
