Sympathectamy???
May 25, 2006
... Lefty, You didn't freak me out I respect your honest answer. I have read and done the research and feel the risk versus reward is not worth it. My doctor feels that if a series of 6 successful nerve blocks work than the sympathectamy is the way to go I dont think the relief that I have been getting from the blocks has been enough to go forward especially since the first 15r... Sympathectamy???
May 25, 2006
... Thanks lefty, See, I remember reading all kinds of horror stories 6 years ago when this was offered to me and I rejected it after doing my research. That is why I was a little taken back when my doctor recommended it again now, I guess I was hoping that there was some type of "miraculous" change in research there was that denial kicking in again. My only problem is that my... (15 replies)
... RSD for 8 years, and 6 years ago my doctors in NY offered my the options of a spinal cord stimulator or a sympathectamy after the 15 or so nerve blocks and all the other misc crap. ... (4 replies)

... Cutting the nerve (performing a Sympathectamy (sp?)) Is a bit drastic, considering you dont have pain. Ask them about an RFA (radio frequency ablation) ad an alternative. This kills the nerve Fibres, but the grow back ( supposedly without the pain returning) as opposed to permanently destroying it. Seems odd to cut the nerve if there us no pain in the first place. The rest... (36 replies)
Ben and the stim

... years is worth the try, I am still contemplating my options, doctors want me to go for more nerve blocks then decide where to go from there whether stimulator or sympathectamy which I wont do. regardless, I just want you to know that I felt like such a fool and wanted to apologize. ... ... Sharon, So when I was offered the morphine pump about 5 years ago from a PM doctor in Jericho, it was still considered experimental, and my insurance would not cover it. Now they also said that my body would be "permanently drugged" lack of feeling is that still how it is? As for doctors I have been to Columbia Prespbyterian, Stonybrook University, University of Pennsylvania... (28 replies)
Sympathectamy???
May 28, 2006
... I have done research and more research on this topic as a matter of fact I did research on this 6 years ago and found the same "not so thrilling" conclusions then as I did now. Th ereason I posted is to see if maybe others heard different and things had changed or maybe others have had better experiences where i can get a persons perspective as opposed to just two dimensional... Sympathectamy???
May 27, 2006
... All the things I have read say sympathectomies are not done anymore - that there is more chance of harm than good. Do a search on recent articles to learn more. Laura. (15 replies)
... Sharon, So I was going through the old posts, and I know you had mentioned in the past posts that you have had this for 20 years, but I dont think that I had put together that you were only 35 and that you got it so young (I hope you or anyone else does not take offense to the age thing) I dont know what I thought actually. Just wanted you to know. Can I ask you a... (28 replies)
Sympathectamy???
May 25, 2006
... Stephanie - I didn't mean to freak you out with what my doc said. Just wanted to pass along his opinion on sympathectomies. Every RSD case is different, so maybe ask your doc why he recommends sympathectomy for you, especially since we've heard so many negatives about it. He may know more about it than my doc. Re: Hope. I think all of us with RSD feel hopeless sometimes.... (15 replies)
... Lefty, Thank you for the kind words and your info on my question about the sympathectamy. I am starting to feel like there is no hope and can I just say really think this F#$%&** RSD crap sucks!!!!! I dont know about anyone else, but after all this time I am really sick of feeling like I have to explain even to my family still sometimes that RSD is real, not that they dont... (16 replies)
Sympathectamy???
May 23, 2006
... Stephanie - I asked my PM Doc a couple months ago about information re: a possible sympathectomy. I just wanted to get info on all possible treatment options. He really wouldn't even discuss it with me as an option, b/c he said that he (and many other PMD's now) won't consider it anymore for RSD cases (Just like Sharon mentioned in her post - Hi Sharon! ). He feels... (15 replies)
Sympathectamy???
May 23, 2006
... Emily, Hope the acupuncture works for you, but I know my doctor went so far as to say no tattoos or be careful with getting filling, not that it happens all the time, but the needles can stimulatre the sympathetic nervous system and trigger the RSD to spread. Good Luck Stephanie (15 replies)
Sympathectamy???
May 22, 2006
... Really? I'll ask my doctor about it. I had an arthrogram and a cortisone shot that made it worse...but those were because they were trigger points - and actual needles....I'll definitly look into though...thanks. Apparently the accupuncturist I'm seeing has dealt with neurological disorders before...I'll update on that later. I hope you find pain relief that works... ... (15 replies)

Sympathectamy???
May 21, 2006
... I ahve been told by numerous doctors that I have seen over the past 8 years thta acupuncture is not a good thing for rsd. Just passing on info that I have received. The theory behind that is that the needles can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system which could trigger the spread of the RSD. (15 replies)
Sympathectamy???
May 21, 2006
... Hi, I have been doing a lot of research lately along with talking to doctors and it seems that would be risky. As you probably know, our pain is not always "sympathetically controlled" and most of the time it's part of it, and hardly ever all of it. Try and get a second opinion and look into alternative medicine for pain relief. I'm getting accupuncture soon,... (15 replies)

Sympathectamy???
May 19, 2006
... Hi Sheri, I have no idea why your foot is hot, dry and doesn't sweat. What does your doc say? I know mine has all those symptoms because of the sympathectomy I had. Sharon :) (15 replies)
... Sharon, thanks for the info especially on the sympathectamy. I am at a crossroad. I was a little taken back when my doctor mentioned this surgery b/c I had read of its unsucessful statistics in the past, I guess I was just hoping that the success rate had changed. how long have you had the pump?
