Schizophrenia Message Board

Schizophrenia Board Index

hi, My 11 yo daughter was just diagnosed with psychosis and NOS. She was having trouble in school and facing the possibility of repeating 4th grade that made us take her to a psychologist for a evaluation of a possible learing disorder. WE were so blown away when she told him she had been seeing and hearing things. Does this mean she has schitzophrenia? What I'm not sure of is this, Haven't we all seen or heard things before like when I drive at night the weeds on the side of the road look like something is standing there until I get right up on it. Or, when I am vacuuming sometimes I hear the doorbell but there is no one there. I dont' know if this is what she is talking about or if it's something else. Last year she was A-B honor roll. She says that in school she hears someone calling her name ALOT and she hears a long beep in her ears. As for the seeing things I think it has only been once. She said she say something like a bloody devil run across the road and laugh at her. But she was with a friend who claims she saw something to. Now was the friend just saying that to fit in or did they see something "blow" across the road.
The doc put her on .25 of Risperdal 3 times a day. She or I can't tell any difference other than she said she doesn't hear the long beep. She has been on spring break so we cant tell schooll wise if it will help.
The doc said that when her mental condition improves she should improve in school also. He didnt' see a learning dis.
Please any advise would be greatly appreciated. Also if any one knows of any similiar boards for children that would be great!
TIA,
Also, she has had problems since around age 5. Mostly anxiety or panic attacks or something like that. For example, sometimes she feels as though she cant breathe or that she isn't getting enough air. She will wake at night or be unable to sleep because she "can't feel her heart beating" and no matter how much we reassure her she keeps asking are we sure or do we promise that she isn't going to die. She loves to go to friends and play but she can't spend the night with them. She does fine until bedtime then she wants to be home. She worries about everything, if she gets a cut she thinks she will die. If she has a pain she thinks it's cancer. If she hears of someone having something she is afraid she will get it. It doesn't stop her from doing or going places but she worries about it.
She hasn't had any comments about being on meds or asking questions like"i am crazy? It's like Oh well .
Hi lwmum,

Sorry for the delay in response and I can understand your urgency. Having an eleven yr old being diagnosed with psychosis would be difficult.

Psychosis in children is rare but it does happen. Psychosis NOS means; Psychosis Not Otherwise Specified. The doctor needs time to observe the symptoms and the response to medication before he/she can say what the diagnosis is. You can have psychosis as a symptom of bipolar or depression. Psychosis can be present from drug use, so, psychosis is not always schizophrenia.

There are other medical conditions which can appear as psychosis such as temporal lobe epilepsy, Wilson's Disease and Huntington's chorea. A full neurological exam would rule these out.

One of the co-teachers that teaches a NAMI Family-to-Family class with me has a son who was diagnosed with childhood onset schizophrenia. He is doing well. I live in Canada but I belive NAMI has a childhood mental illness support group. Call around until you connect with this group. They will be most helpful for you. On-line there is schizophrenia.com which has some wonderful parents on their childhood support board and great information on childhood schizophrenia.

Try not to get too worried lwmom. Easier said than done, I know. Treatment works for these mental illnesses.

Hugs to you and your little one.

Iwmom, I second Serene's post. Check the facilities around get info and assistance ( I wish I had all the organizations etc available in your homelands.)

Personally I think that some of our children are being given too many legal drugs.

Iwmom, just pace yourself and keep a journal of your child's point of view and yours related to incidents that occur when you are present. Then compare notes. ok. BE TOUGH!

I hope your daughter is doing better. If she has some kind of psychosis know that it is a chemical imbalance and she should do better on medication. Keep us posted. I just joined the board tonight. I was looking for info on perimenopause for myself. My mom suffers from Schizophrenia and my dad is experiencing the early stages of Parkinson's Disease. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
