Schizophrenia Message Board

Schizophrenia Board Index

Yes, I've experienced that "dream-like" state during psychosis.

I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type (a cross between bipolar and schizophrenia) last year and for me, my delusions *and* psychosis were equally debilitating. Until my manic episode last year, my paranoia went untreated for 10 years because I was unaware of what was happening to me.

Some of my delusions included the idea that people were following me, watching me through cameras installed in my apartment and poisoning my food. I was also afraid to go to jail for crimes I did not commit.

In addition to the delusions, I also experienced psychosis (I heard at least 10 different voices). These were the voices of my friends, family members and strangers.

Some of them commented on what I was doing while others had conversations about me. When they communicated directly with me, all of their messages centered around death and persecution.

One voice read my eulogy and recounted my life from birth to my premature death at age 36. Another tried to convince me to ingest an entire bottle of Tylenol.

Fortunately, I've been stable on meds over the past year and haven't experienced any psychosis or paranoia.

My tdoc has helped me identify my triggers (stress, lack of sleep), so I can do my best to avoid them in order to prevent a relapse.

Interesting note: I've done some reading about schizophrenia and one person described it as "dreaming while you are awake." I think that's a perfect description.
