Are all schizophrenics aware that they have schizophrenia? And how long does it take to progress into something uncontrollable? My friend has this illness, and his mom is a pharmacist, she puts him on pills for a week, then she takes him of for a month, then she gives it to him again for 2 weeks, this is really messing his health up, does this have any contribution to making the illness worse?

The level of insight a person with schizophrenia has depends on how severe their symptoms are. If they experience frequent psychosis, their insight would be considerably less than someone who does not.

As for your friend, the best treatment protocol for schizophrenia are daily meds and therapy if a person feels that is warranted.

I've been hearing voices 24/7 since 1991 although I am not schizophrenic. My voices are caused by bipolar disorder of which I have schizophrenia-like symptoms.

I was recently put on a new med regimen that is working great in reducing my voices, delusions and paranoia. I've been free of voices for just about 2 months. If I accidentally miss a dose of my meds or do not take all of my meds, I start to hear voices, become delusional and extremely paranoid.
well he OD's on various things, painkillers, sleeping pills, weed, alcohol, basically anything.

the problem with my situation is that we live in a small town in South Africa, the only clinic we have for such mental problems just puts you on Valium for a week, so you are really high, and then they just have sessions with a psychiatrist. because his mom is a pharmacist, he can easily access pills like valium, and believe you me , once he has experienced that high, he will most certainly just start OD'ing on them. the only other option in our town is being locked up. we're 19 and in college, so traveling is not an option.

I don't know anything about the emergency services in South Africa, but is there a way you could call the authorities whenever he ODs? If neither of you can drive long distances, perhaps they could drive you to the nearest hospital. I'm totally blind and cannot drive myself, so if I am in need of IP treatment, I call 911 so that an officer can take me to the ER to be evaluated.
so, I know that this has nothing to do with the topic, but I fell like I can talk to you. My mom is accusing me of taking Valium just to get high, and she says that that is why my sleeping pills are not working, which is of course ludicrous, because I don't even know what a Valium looks like, and my sleeping pills are just not strong enough. my mom is really making my life hell, she even says that I am manipulating my psychiatrist and thats why he is on my side. she keeps making up stories and I think she is really crazy.

I'm 19, so I enjoy to go out and drink with my friends, I am a smoker and that is about it, I don't sleep around, I don't do drugs and I don't even hang out with people I don't know. She just has this image in her head of me being a dirty slut. I am a law student and currently my average is 75%. When I was in the twelfth grade, I just came out of the hospital for trying to commit suicide (the doctors said that I should have been dead, and even if I survive I will be a vegetable for the rest of my life) 5 days later my end exams began and I decided to go write it, my average was 82% with four distinctions.

I just don't know how to prove myself to them anymore, I am by nature a very independent person, but they are treating me like I am 12. So I have decided to move out. My friend is going to come fetch me tomorrow morning and then I am going to take out a student loan to pay for a place. (my studies are covered for with a bursary) My parents do no know of my arrangements, can I have your thoughts on my situation. If I stay longer here, I will either kill my mom or myself... seriously. I would actually kill her... a plus side on having a schizophrenic friend.
