... duliel, A distinction is made between genetic/environmental factors that cause bipolar vs. bipolar symptoms that are caused by the use of illicit drugs. The DSM states that if a person experiences manic episodes due to alcohol or drugs, this does not warrant a diagnosis of bipolar. I would think that when a person experiences mania they want to smoke more than usual because it gives them even more of a "high."
