Cancer: Skin Message Board

Cancer: Skin Board Index

Recently (for about a month or so), I had noticed there was a mole on my back that became very itchy and started to protrude. Dermatologist did not seem very concerned but did a shave biopsy almost 2 weeks ago. The labs came back positive for squamous cell carcinoma. The only other things I was told is that the cell changes were mild, and they "think" they got it all. I was told to schedule a recheck in 6 months and that is all. My questions:
1. How could they know they got it all?
2. I always thought a biopsy was purely diagnostic. Shouldn't they want to excise it?
3. The healing is slow, and I did read that this is normal. I can't see it well since it's on my back, but I did manage to take a picture of it and see that there is a scab in the center, then a white looking thin border, then a red ring around it. Is this normal?
I'm just scared after reading more about this. Thank you in advance. Not sure if this board will let me post the pic but let me know what you think.
