Hi Stacey,

For long term insomnia treatment, Ambien and Sonata, which belong to the class of drugs known as hypnotics, are not recommended because of tolerance and addiction problems. Generally, they are prescribed for sporadic or short-term use.

Drugs that are used for long-term treatment include benzodiazapems, such as Klonopin and Valium, or tri-cyclic anti-depressants such as Elavil and Remeron.

If the insomnia is causing you major problems and affecting your ability to function during the day, you should probably have a sleep study done to determine what is the exact cause of your insomnia.
