Sleep Disorders Board Index

I posted before about my past sleeping problems - I've been taking 50mg amitriptyline hcl (elavil) and a 1/4 tablet melatonin for three years. My doctor says it's ok - others don't agree. Someone on here gave a good explanation about what happens when one takes sleep aids for a long time. It's something along the lines of: the brain stops producing chemicals to sleep because the pills provide them. IT can take time for the brain to get back to normal. Also, though, I've read that the pills can cause neurotransmitters to die off, and the meds will be ineffective when this happens.

Maybe the explanation has been in the back of my mind and is playing tricks on me, but I have had a tough time lately getting to sleep. I am worried that maybe over time the melatonin and elavil have lost their effectiveness to help me sleep. I had thought about trying to ease off of them - maybe just take 1/2 a dose elavil with the melatonin, but I don't want to do that now that I'm not sleeping well. I started taking Citralopram (generic Celexa), an antidepressant on Wednesday. It made me really groggy and disoriented so I stopped immediately. Maybe that had something to do with it? Or maybe it's depression related? I've been having a tough time lately, but don't think I'm seriously depressed. I will start taking the Citralopram in a lower dose if I feel that I'm really on a downward spiral (tho I was doing better yesterday, and probably would today if I'd gotten more sleep).

Don't know what to do about the sleep meds. If I ease off, how long will it take for my brain to kick in and get my sleep cycle back to normal? "Normal" meaning how it's been most of my life, and not the few weeks it was messed up before going on the meds. Hoping it will get back to normal on its own so I won't have to switch meds to sleep, if these indeed are not working anymore. Will the antidepressant maybe help me sleep better, even if I take it in the morning? If I decide to go on that, I definitely want to ease off the sleep meds - that is too much to take on a daily basis...
I think you should ease off slowly to see what happens

I was going to last night, but I didn't get much sleep at all the night before, so I didn't chance it. Luckily, I don't think the problem was with the sleep meds - just must've been a passing thing, cause i was able to get about 8 hours sleep last night. :) Tomorrow, I think I'll take half of the elavil dosage, and see what happens...
