I've been taking Elavil (Amiltryptaline) for a couple weeks now and even at 20mg I still don't get really tired and I'm waking up a few times a night. I thought that this drug would knock me out, but so far it really hasn't. I don't wake up with a hangover feeling either like other people say happens to them. Maybe the dose needs to be higher. I also take it for pain and it hasn't really helped with that either. I guess I need to give it more time. What are your opinions on this drug for sleep and pain?

Crystal
I took Elavil/amitryptaline for about 10 years specifically for insomnia. It helped me for a long time, but I was at a much higher dosage, 75mg, taken about 2 hours before bedtime. However, I gained a great deal of weight over the course of taking this medication and it is one of the reasons I discontinued it. However, my insomnia was resistant to nearly every other medication and this was a Godsend for me at the time.

I would check to see if you can try a different dosage. I had initially tried a lower dosage and it was not effective. Once my doctor increased the dosage, sleep became much better and was pretty consistent for many years.

Good luck; sleep is so vital to every part of your life! I wish you sweet dreams soon.

Blessings,
TexMom
Thanks guys for your responses! I hear of so many people gaining weight taking Elavil. I just hope that I don't. I'm trying to not eat the bad stuff and only stick to my healthy diet.

TexMom85 - It seems that Elavil was the drug of choice for you for sleep. I think I will give it another a couple weeks and then I might increase the dose again. I'm also taking it for pain and I'm hoping I'll see results for that as well soon. It probably takes a little while to build up in the system to help with pain. What are you taking now for sleep?

Hi Crystal,

I have so many ailments that it's hard for me to know which ones contribute to the aid of my sleep, but specifically, I take Ambien CR, Promethazine (generic Phenergan, the anti-nausea medication) and Klonopin (aka Clonazapam). I also take Mirapex for Restless Legs Syndrome and have some other things I take for nerve pain, so I am literally a walking drug store. The Phenergan is very sedating without side effects (at least for me) and has helped make the Ambien more effective.

I know how hard it is to find quality sleep, and when you add pain into the equation, it makes it infinitely more difficult. I hope the Elavil will help you--it definitely helped with my Fibromyalgia pain--and if you stay active and away from the sweets, you may not have as much trouble with the weight gain.

Let us know how you're doing! I'll keep you in my prayers.

Blessings,
TexMom
TexMom,

I have fibromyalgia also, as well as other pain conditions that go along with it. It's so frustrating. I take Lyrica for it and it helps a lot. I'm taking Elavil for vulvodynia and IC pain. I also just started to take Klonopin to help sleep and relax my muscles. I'm going to alternate that with my Xanax as needed. I was hoping that Elavil was going to help my fibro on top of the Lyrica. Fibro is horrible because it's usually not just fibro, but a whole lot of other conditions that occur as well.

Crystal
