I'll explain my situation a bit and I welcome any suggestions. I'm a 37 year old male in decent shape. Happily married for 14 years with two good kids. My finances are good and I really have no stress other than I do work evenings which can be frustrating but I don't sweat it too much. My job is pretty strenuous so that is my daily exercise if you want to call it that. Not that it matters much but I like to have a few drinks on the weekends but very rarely drink during the week.

Let me start off by saying that I have always been a light sleeper. As far back as I can remember I would have bouts with insomnia but after a few days or so I would crash and get back on schedule. My current situation is different. It started a couple months back when one sleepless night turned into about a week of exhaustion. I hit the pharmacy for some OTC sleep aid (Benadryl) and it did the trick the first couple nights but after that it was worthless. It had been a while since I had bloodwork so I called the doctor to get an appointment. Unfortunately he was on vacation for a couple weeks so it was about a month before I could get in....I thought this was fine. I ended up suffering for the next several weeks with literally no sleep. Some days were pretty odd really. I was too tired to open my eyes but I was awake just laying there in bed. I tried everything! I tried all the "healthy" sleep aids and even tried a couple Xanax my wife had extra from a recent business trip. They relaxed me but didn't help me sleep. It was almost like I forgot how to sleep or was too tired to sleep. After a couple weeks I cut out all my caffeine, alcohol and fast food....none of it worked although I did lose 10 pounds. Finally it was time to see the doctor. Pretty routine check up. He said he would rather not prescribe any medication until after my bloodwork came back. Well of course my bloodwork came back just fine with my cholesterol a little high and my EA% a tad high because of allergies which have been bad this year. The doctor said to give it a few days knowing that nothing was wrong with me to see if the lack of stress helped. After a few more days of more restless sleep I ended up missing a day of work because I was so exhausted and sick to my stomach. So I called my doctor and it was time to give Ambien a try. He recommended no more than 3 times a week. Last Thursday was my first time. I slept about 3 1/2 hours solid and then off and on for a few more but I felt prettty good when I got up. Friday was the best I've felt in months. I was looking forward to going to sleep Friday night just hoping that my body just needed a jump start but I ended up not sleeping at all. My son had a football game early Saturday so I stayed up all night and day, aerated my yard, had a couple drinks and again no sleep Saturday night. I was beyond exhausted! So last night I went to the Ambien again. Worked like a charm but I woke up literally 3 1/2 hours later again and tossed and turned the rest of the night.

So this brings me to tonight. Busy night at work tonight and I can hardly keeps my eyes open as I type this. I'm just hoping I can get some rest tonight. I'm on my 3rd new pillow in the last month so maybe that does the trick lol!!! My plan is to take the Ambien on Sundays and Wednesdays and one other night a week when I'm exhausted. I guess my question is how long do I give this a shot before going back to see the doctor? I just feel like something has to be wrong somewhere since I am unable to sleep. My wife thinks I'm just paranoid since everything checked out but why else can't I sleep? I am beyond frustrated. I can make my mind go completely blank and really feel like it is time for some sleep to no avail. I'm glad the Ambien has given me a few hours sleep but I guess I had hoped for more. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks
